SARASOTA - Hopeful to make a start on reducing dependence on fossil fuels, Sarasota County was designated today as the first renewable community demonstration project in the nation.
The designation was announced by Terry Penney, technology manager for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, part of the U.S. Department of Energy.
Joining in the partnership are county government, Florida Power and Light, home builders. They have a goal to build energy efficient homes, using technologies such as solar water heating, solar electricity, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
The first step, said County Commissioner Shannon Staub, is to build five zero energy homes with the new technologies, with the hope it will increase the demand for those kind of homes.
