CLEVELAND -- NASA Glenn Research Center is leading research on a device to replace batteries.

The rechargeable devices could make plug-in hybrid cars and fuel-cell vehicles a reality because they could store much more power than a battery.

Unlike lithium and older lead acid batteries, they could be instantly recharged hundreds of thousands of times.

The lightweight devices also could help utilities avoid blackouts.

Most important for NASA, the devices would enable the space agency's astronauts to build electric distribution grids for colonies on the moon and Mars.

Cuyahoga County has pledged $750,000 to help the business consortium led by NASA Glenn. Its partners include Eaton Corp. and Parma-based Graftech International.
